If you are reading this post, you are likely looking for information to become a happy SIL participant. For NDIS participants who want to live more independently, Supported Independent Living (SIL) is the answer. It gives access to services that include installing ramps, widening doorways for wheelchair users and making services easier to use for all people with disabilities.

Chances are, you might be a bit confused about how SIL works. If this is you, we just want to start off by telling you that you’re not the only one. Navigating through the world of SIL can be overwhelming as there is tons of information available online. That said, we are here to assist you in your SIL journey. Here’s a step-by-step guide to become a happy SIL participant.

The pain itself is important, but the pain is enhanced by the adipiscing process, but I give it time to cut it down so that I do some great work and pain.

Step 1: Build a team

Having the right SIL funding and support team is the key to become a happy SIL participant. The funding comes down to whether the SIL supports are reasonable, necessary and appropriate for your situation. Also, you will need a team to assist you in this life-changing journey. Some important people you will need to include in your team are:
• Support coordinator: A support coordinator is like your advocate, guiding you through the SIL process and helping you find the right provider and funding options.
• Plan manager: A plan manager helps you monitor your funds and get access to financial reporting.
• Supports: You must make sure you are ready for SIL. This may involve learning new skills and getting prepared for the transition. Doesn’t matter if you’ve paid for or have informal supports, have them on your team.
• Healthcare professionals: You will have to go through a lot of healthcare appointments and consultations to ensure you get the right supports. So, include allied healthcare professionals in your SIL journey.
• Family: Whether you’re moving out of your home or planning to get involved in community access and participation, it’s always a huge deal to change. Without your family, it’s something difficult to achieve. So, include your family members in your team.

Step 2: Find a provider

Now that the above steps have been completed its time for the fun stuff, finding a provider. The provider will manage the staff in your home and help you with community access. Thus, find someone reliable and caring. You can ask your support coordinator for help. Make sure your provider has a really great knowledge of the SIL sector.

Step 3: Make a roster of care

A roster of care is an NDIS list of supports you will need. It includes details like when you need these supports and how you want them to get delivered. To create a roster of care, you will need to do some appointments with Occupational Therapists. Your provider will help you put this together and send it to the NDIS.

Step 4: Trial it

Meet the housemates, staff and community members before doing a trial to make sure that the supports are right for you. During this trial, try to know everyone a bit better so that you will be happy with your choices. This will make the transition process a little less scary. You can do this through a short term accommodation (STA) up to a two week trial or medium term( MTA ) up to a 3 month stay. After this you can choose to transition to SIL.

Step 5: Move-in

If you have made it this far, congratulations! You are ready to move into your new home. Make sure everything is working smoothly for you and you have access to services.
